I have messed with midi fairly extensively on a PC. I know that I had to
have a joystick connector that also doubled as a midi connector. I
actually built my own midi extension cables because the factory ones were
too short for my purposes. The port was a "D" shaped connection on the
sound card. I used a program on the PC called Cakewalk that was pretty
decent. I am sure that there are even better programs for the Macs.
One of my favorite tricks with midi was to capture my kids voices as a .wav
file and import it as a midi sound. You can play it up and down the
keyboard as you would any of the 128 midi effects.
Wish I knew more about the Mac and midi. I pretty much just use my Mac at
work as a graphics workhorse. Whoaaa!

Older pc sound cards had a midi input on them. I think it was like
an 11 or 13 pin d shaped port. Unless you can find a converter to
make it a standard midi jack, and buy an interface box to plug it
into the mac, your probably out of luck.
Maybe someone knows more about this than me... Anyone???

I have a keyboard I originally purchased to use with Finale for

on what I might do to hook this up to my mac?
