The iBook was purchased new in September and had OS X installed. I would think it would have the normal print drivers installed, but maybe not. Where would one look to see if print drivers are installed?
Another oddity: When I run Disk Utility on the iBook with the intent of repairing permissions, the only options I get are "Erase" and "Restore" -- no option to verify or repair permissions. I'm running the iBook logged in as an administrator, so it's not being caused by lack of administrative privileges.
