I use Timbuktu often, both on a LAN and from remote locations, to
access and control 7 or 8 Macs in my office. My remote access is
usually through cable or DSL connection, so speed generally is not an
issue. I'm very impressed with its features generally, although it does
occasionally flake out (drop the connection) over the LAN, with a
message that "the host computer is using an incompatible version of
Timbuktu" -- despite the fact that both computers have the same version
installed.

I've actually found the newer versions to be more stable for remote
connections than over a LAN. I have done remote file transfers of as
much as 60 MB and I regularly make changes to our email server's
configurations and troubleshoot other users computer problems
(including my 91-year-old father's iMac) using Timbuktu. At this point,
I consider it one of my essential applications.

I've never used it for Mac to PC connections, so can't speak to its
capabilities there, but I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.
