Harry, I don't know how you do it now, but when I started  using 
iphoto, a pop-up asked me whether I wanted to have iphoto open when I 
connect my digital camera. Sinve  I don't have a digital camera, i 
declined. So somewhere you must be able to turn this off. The 
preferences don't seem to do it, but I am sure some guru will know
