Hey Folks,

I thought I'd finally get around to using IMAP for mail, but I've run
into some things which seem odd to me concerning folders and subfolders
on different accounts. (I'm using the term folder to correspond with what
would be a folder on the Mac, though I think that the term for IMAP is
'mailbox'.)

Using iTools:

If I connect to my iTools account, I can create folders as expected and
move mail messages around as expected, for instance.

Make a new folder called Foo
Put a couple of email messages in it.
Decide it should have a subfolder.
Make a subfolder of Foo called Bar
Put a couple of messages in it.

Using athena or erdos (both are machines at UofL):

When I create folders, unless the folder has a subfolder to start with, I
cannot create a subfolder. So...

Make a new folder (with a subfolder) called Foo
put a couple of email messages in it.
Decide it should have a subfolder.
Try to make a subfolder called Foo.
Get an Mailbox Creation Failed error message stating that Mail could not
subscribe to the mailbox.

If, however, I create a folder with a subfolder directly, I can create
any number of subfolders, so... I if

I create the folder/subfolder Foo/Bar, I can then put more folders inside
of Foo (like Snafu, IMHO, and TLA), BUT none of those folders can have
subfolders.

What is the problem here? Is it that I have my IMAP Path Prefix incorrect
on erdos (where I have it as the full path to a mail folder in my home
folder) and athena (where I have it as ~/Mail)? Is it a difference in
servers? My suspicion is the former.

I seem to recall that Lee said that all messages in a mailbox were stored
as a single file, which would mean that it would be impossible for a
'mailbox' to have a 'submailbox', i.e. a folder which held email messages
to hold both folders and mail messages.

Am I being an idiot?

TIA (thanks in advance) for answering all but the last question.

Bill
