How much free space is on your drive? If a drive is really full, new 
files are more likely to be fragmented all over the place, and this 
might slow things down.

Another cause of slowness is lack or RAM.

But, some things in Mac OS X will win no speed records, no matter what 
you do. The Eternal Rainbow Pizza of Time sometimes shows up from the 
middle of nowhere for inscrutable reasons.
