You didn't say what operating system you are running.

With Mac OS X, most programs can be uninstalled by trashing them. 
Sometimes you'll also have to plumb the depths of your ~/Library 
directory to remove registration and preferences information, but it 
doesn't hurt to leave it there, if you don't mind wasting a few bytes 
of drive space.

Under Mac OS 9, I would use an uninstaller because the program may have 
installed extensions and other types of ugly nonsense. Trashing the 
program's directory won't remove other detritus scattered by the 
installer.
