Recently there have been a few requests for info about using the fsck
command in single user mode to repair directory problems. There is a
pretty decent tutorial about using this command to fix not only the main
boot drive but others as well.

Though the article is a bit verbose, it does not require a Doctorate of
Geek Science degree to follow it as the tutorial is written for those
who are indeed faint-of-heart when it comes to using UNIX commands in
the terminal.app that is provided by Apple.

Comes complete with references to similar articles on the Apple
web-site. One suggestion before trying this at home with the kid's
computer: print it out and keep it by your side as it guides you through
the process.
