I started fiddling with this last night, and got some strange results:

. If I included just the initialization string and the dial string, the 
modem would dial the part of the number which shuts off call waiting 
(*70,) and then stop, complaining that there was a crossed connection. 
This at least shows that the modem is at least partially hearing the 
modem script.

. When I added pauses to the small script above, it just stopped doing 
anything, and then complained about a crossed connection.

. When I went back to using the terminal window and putting in the 
initialization string and all, everything worked just fine.

I couldn't quite add all the steps in the modem script, because, at some 
point, there is a 'userhook' command which is needed for compression and 
error checking. Unfortunately, the script never made it this far, 
regardless of the size of the pauses I put in.

Back to the drawing board.
