Hey y'all! Found a fix! It may or may not be optimal, but at least my machine can dial out under Jaguar.
. Use a text editor, like <a href="http://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit_lite.html">BBEdit Lite</a> to open up the modem script being used. The modem scripts are in /Library/Modem Scripts, and have the names which appear in the list of modems on the modem tab of the Network preferences. . Find the line @LABEL 2 . insert the following 2 lines write "ath\13" pause 30 . Save the modem script back into the /Library/Modem Scripts folder with some name full of invectives. . Quit and the start the System Preferences . Choose your aptly named modem script from the list of modems. Voila! The modem script should work now. If you turn the modem sound on, and turn the volume way up high on your computer, you should be able to hear the modem hanging up the phone (this it what the ath command does). One other thing which may have affected this (though I doubt it): I found that my modem needed a firmware update from the year 2000. It took only about 2 hours of fighting with the machine (many, many crashes under OS 9) to get the updater to work. The key here was to boot into OS 9, and dial out once. Then everything went smoothly. Note that the unedited modem script still failed after the firmware update. Now... time to try and figure out why my machine now refuses to go to sleep! Somehow this list of tasks and the time spent on them is decidedly un Mac-like. -- bill The next meeting of the Louisville Computer Society will be September 24 For more information, see <http://www.aye.net/~lcs>.
