Try opening the Terminal from the Utilties folder of the Applications folder, and type top -u Look and see what is sucking down all the CPU cycles. I've had such things happen twice: Once under 10.1.x when the machine was choking on a bad font. Once under 10.2 for apparently no reason, where the machine hanged for all of 10 seconds every 5 minutes. I finally shut the machine off at the power switch and restarted (not advised).
