Weimar Germany always intrigued me, because I thought it was disturbing that there could be a mass insanity called National Socialism, and I wondered if it were at all possible for the US (or me in particular) to fall prey to such an insanity. Tucholsky was one of the voices in Weimar which made the case against the Nazis about as strong and clear as possible... and who convinced me that I could have been inoculated against the Nazis. I used to think that the US would be immune to a national insanity --- I'm not so sure any more. We could use a Tucholsky.
