A year or so ago I had the same problem you are having -- I could not  
get any other home page to "take" other than the default Apple one. I  
wish I could tell you how I fixed it, but I think it just went away  
with one of Apple's updates. Like you, I remember asking others if  
they were having this same problem and no one else was.

If you haven't applied the latest Apple system updates, you might  
want to try that.

I don't know if Apple offers a separate download of just Safari on  
its Web site (probably not), but if they do it would be worth a try  
to download and reinstall it.
