My eyes opened: this "bug" was due to a *brain freeze* on my part.
D'oh! ---> ~( : ?( ) <--- I had Disk Utility running cleanup/maintenance for many hours (minimized) on a drive, and had forgotten all about it. Never even saw a 'disk full' alert, but obviously, low available disk space memory was the culprit. AOK now.
