Ann,

Yes, you can put the Linksys wireless router right next to the cable  
modem and connect the cable modem directly to the router without  
having any computer present. If the wireless router work correctly,  
it will broadcast the signal to any nearby computer that has a  
wireless network card.

Ignore the CD. Those are usually for PCs and almost never needed by  
Macs.

You may have to jump through some technical hoops to get Insight to  
recognize its connection to the wireless router. If you previously  
had a computer connected directly to the cable modem, Insight's  
system may expect to find that machine rather than the router and get  
confused initially. If that's the case, call Insight and tell them  
that you have connected a new device (a router) to the cable modem  
and they should be able to tell you what to do to get it recognized.
