For those of us using HP large format printers, I resolved the problem by removing all references to my hp designjet 120 from the printer list and reloading it. For some reason the last update for the printer which I had downloaded and installed had not completely replaced the previous version of the driver. This was confusing to me because the software outside of OS X was all that was affected. iPhoto knew which drivers to use but my other software did not. Anyway, it's up and running again. I hope this experience helps.
