When Apple turned 10.3.9 loose on the world, the world found out it
(the update) included a big update to Safari as well (bringing it to
version 1.3).

As some have noted, the update changed the way things 'used to work'
and added new features, some of these apparently having a less than
desired effect. There are a couple of tips for making Safari go back to
the old ways:

(This tip courtesy of Dave Hyatt, the lead programmer of Apple's Safari
team)

1) If you held down the control key while clicking on a link, you used
to get a menu popping up with several choices, one of these was to
download the linked file using the 'Save As' dialog box which let you
store the file anywhere you wanted to. Now if you control click on a
link (okay, for you multi-button uses --- right click :^) ) you get the
menu popping up, but the 'Save As' option is only a 'Save' option;
saving files right to your desktop only.

To get the 'Save As' choice back, hold down the control and option keys
while clicking on the link.

2) Back in the old Safari, if you wanted to view PDF files in the
browser, you needed to add a plugin to Safari to do so. Lots of folks
preferred to download the file and use Preview instead because it
seemed much faster. The new Safari has a plug-in to display the PDF
files as a scrolling page. And some folks do not care for this.

To get the old behavior back, quit Safari, open the Terminal, and type
the command:

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES

To restore Safari's handling of PDFs, repeat the above command,
changing YES to NO. Remember to quit Safari first.
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool NO

There are some other new Safari tips out there, but most of those are a
bit more power user related.

Someday, I will come up with a clever signature line. I am not sure if
I will use it or not, but I will come up with one.
