I asked the folks I work with for LCD/notebook monitor repair/replacement
and they said in 65% of situations such as what you describe, the problem
is with the power inverter (i.e. very dim screen but you still
can see the images).
Their suggestion is to change the inverter first before you would
consider changing the screen because if you don't change it, even a brand
new screen will be dim.  That is, assuming you don't take advantage of
Bill's advice below.
