In 10.x, I've used it by starting up from its cd to rebuild the directory; didn't have to install it. In System 9, I copied its extension into my extensions folder, then could restart from its cd to scan the disk. The OS X version was worth the cost, by the way; it straightened out my office G4 in a hurry and is waiting to flex on my G5 (not shipped yet, but I'm already making a home for it).
