If you're using Orifice X, then I've found that deleting ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Registration Cache X every time I start MS-Anything will make the applications run w/o the crashes which I used to have. If anyone is interested, I could send the AppleScripts which I use to start MS-Excel and MS-Word (which I suppose could be extended to start MS-Powerpoint).
