This is the way that I do it. There may be others. Find the picture/icon that you want to use and command-c to copy it to the clipboard. Then click on the folder that you want to copy it to and go to command-i to open the get info window. Click on the folder image in the get info window and command-v to paste. As I said, this is the old fashioned way, but it still works.
