I have hundreds of fonts scattered throughout my computer -- in:

System Folder/Fonts
System/Library/Fonts
Library/Fonts
Users/DLC/Library/Fonts

... and a few other locations.

When I do a "get info" on individual font files I find them variously
identified as:

DFONT -- Datafork TrueType Font
FFIL -- Font suitcase
TTF -- Windows TrueType Font
LWFN -- Postscript Type 1 Outline Font
OTT -- OpenType Font

In systems prior to X, I had pretty well figured out the TrueType and
Postscript Type 1 distinctions, and I got used to using Adobe Type
Manager to activate, deactivate my fonts and group them into sets.

I have just downloaded and begun to use Linotype's free FontExplorer
X and now I'm grappling with how best to organize my fonts, which
ones to deactivate, how to group them into useful sets, etc., but I
really need to understand the world of fonts and how they're used in
OS X a little better.

Can someone point me to a good source of information on the different
types of fonts that are used in OS X (and Classic) and the different
locations that X uses to install them?

One simple question: Does it hurt anything to have the same font in /
System Folder/Fonts and /Library/Fonts, for example? Does it take up
extra memory, increase the chance of font conflicts, etc.?

Thanks.

Dan
