Bill, keep on trying to find out. I am having trouble that way, too, 
can make a disk image on my (still Panther), but then cannot play 
neither the disk image, nor do a burning. I get the kernel panic. You 
are better at it than I will ever be. Maybe you can solve it. This has 
just happened lately. Before everything went smoothly.  And I have all 
the right kind of DVDs  ( -R type for use with Macs.) I believe it to 
be the DVD's fault. Maybe Apple does not want the Install DVD copied 
and  took some protective measures.
