Hi Nora, Well, the prognosis is NOT good.
The link below applies to all studio displays even though it reads specific to the 15". http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=51079 Your research into the problem is correct and the repair is cost prohibitive due to the falling costs of these displays. Apple will charge you almost $500 to repair it. Due to the extravagant cost, I would replace it. Sorry. I wish I had better news.
