It sounds more like a simple extension conflict. Here's what I would do, 
your mileage may vary.

Since Eudora is up to version 6.x, I'd update to the latest.

Make sure you've got the latest version of Stuffit. I'd download the 
right version (7?) and use the installer to remove it. Then, do a search 
for Stuffit and remove everything but the installer. Restart, empty 
trash and reinstall a fresh version.

Do the steps to find a conflict.

As a last resort, do a clean install of OS9 and see if the problem persists.
