Problem solved! I reformatted my hard drive, just in case I hadn't installed the drivers. Still no luck running the OS 9 install disk on the laptop.
After doing some reading, I turned off my laptop, connected it to my desktop machine with a firewire cable, and restarted my laptop in firewire disk mode. The lap hard drives appeared on the desktop machine as external hard drives. I ran the OS 9 system installer from the desktop machine and installed OS 9 on my laptop. Classic now runs on its own partition on the laptop. Thanks for your help.
