I was also thinking about getting one for my wife, but I had a question
that Apple didn't answer. Perhaps you can.

She would mostly use it to listen to audio books. Many of the small MP3
players are badly designed for this because they don't remember where
you were when you were when you last stopped listening. Does the
Shuffle remember where you were between sessions while playing tracks
in order? If it doesn't, it will be a poor choice for audio books.

PS/ My regular iPod remembers, unless I make the mistake of plugging it
into iTunes to add or remove tracks. If I let iTunes touch it, the
bookmark is gone. That is the most annoying "feature" of the iPod for
me.
