Good advise to Harry, I do exactly as you say, have had three of the 
Airport Extreme, (different locations) six of the Airport Express and 
only one of the Express have been bad (when new, out of the box).  They 
work unbelievably well and do multitasking very well, and any software 
and firmware updates are handed to us automatically.  Things just seem 
to work better when they are from the "Parent".
