Uhh are you using Mail?

The bold shows up in the mailbox name when there are un-read messages 
in it. Try it, Move a message that you haven't read to a mailbox. the 
name will become "emboldened".
Similarly, the number of unread messages is what is displayed in the 
slide out tray of mailboxes.

On the other hand, if you select a mailbox, then in the main window, 
the line right below the toolbar has the number of messages in that 
mailbox.
