Here something new ...

Go to the International pane of the System Prefs. Click on the 'Input Menu'
tab, and check the box next to 'Character Palette' -- this will place a
small icon on the menu bar, and is accessible from every application.

>From this menu, you can select 'Show Character Palette', which brings up a
floating window. Choose 'Roman' from the combo menu at the top, then 'Latin'
or 'Math' etc from the items along the left edge. You'll see all the
standard symbols in those and other character sets.

It's handy and quick, and has many many other symbols to choose from, in
other languages. Try 'Japanese' or  'Chinese' from the top menu and look at
all that stuff.
