Hello Diane, It sounds like you have two separate issues. On the first one (going to sleep and waking up as other -- You mentioned that you are in Mutli-user mode, check your preference settings for both screen saver and sleep mode. One of the options is to auto log-out upon entering sleep/screensaver mode. Turn this off. This would explain why you are being presented with the "other user" when waking back up.
On the modem/network loss, this used to be a problem in 10.1, but mostly Apple fixed it (there are still a few sleep related issues in 10.2. but these tend to be of the more obscure ones. I think if you tap into Apple's knowledge base at http://www.apple.com/ and click on the support tab, you may find your answers. I will check later on, but have to leave for a while.
