Is the ethernet connection in the computer built into the motherboard or is
it a pci card? If it's a card then you probably need drivers.

If it's built into the motherboard you might need proprietary drivers from
Starmax that probably came on the original cd's.

That's my 2 cents.

Here's a strange one for all you system sleuths:

I'm trying to install OS 9 on a Mac clone (remember those?), a Motorola
Starmax 3000/180 (PPC 603 chip running at 180 Mhz). I initialized the hard
drive and did the install with the OS 9 CD (it's actually OS 9.0.4). The
install seems to go fine, but when I reboot and try to use the computer, I
note that I have no connection to the Ethernet LAN that the computer is
connected to.

First thing I do is check the Appletalk control panel to make sure that it's
connection mode is set to "Ethernet" and, lo and behold, find that there is
no option listed in the control panel's pop-up menu for an Ethernet
connection, just "Printer", "Modem" and "Remote".

Thinking that somehow the installer failed to install the appropriate
Ethernet extension, I went back and did a custom install of all the Ethernet
extensions. Rebooted. No change. I re-initialized the disk and repeated the
installation. Same result.

I look in the System/Extensions folder and find several Ethernet extensions,
including:

Apple Built-in Ethernet
Apple Enet
Apple Ethernet CS
Apple Ethernet CSII
Apple Ethernet LC
Apple Ethernet NB

So what's missing? What extension or control panel or piece of system
software tells the Appletalk control panel to offer an "Ethernet" connection
option?

I intend to upgrade to 9.2.2, but in order to do that I have to first be
able to access the network where the upgraders reside.

Thanks.

Dan

What a strange, long, trip it is!

remember: it's not how fast you climb the hill that matters, it's how fast
you go coming down!
