So I found.

Comparing the semi-legible gibberish fonts in my Word X formatting palette,
with the fonts in my OS9 Fonts Folder, I found all the bad fonts were in
OS9. So I deleted them, and they disappeared from Word X.

Strange how Word X uses fonts from every font folder in both OS9 and OSX.
There was that one font folder in OS9, and three font folders in the three
libraries in OSX.
