Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. I have ruled out cordless telefones.
I have not yet played with channels. Running AirPort Setup Assistant/ "Set up your computer to join an existing wireless network" always fixes it, but sometimes I cannot run it because it is grayed out. Those times, I must wait until it is active again. I'm convinced that the problem comes from my software overwriting the specs, or readng specs from the wrong RAM.
