I have used Quicken 2003 since it came out, maintaining 3 people data files,
but I have not noticed any problems. I was using Release 1 and just updated
to Release 3 as a result of reading your message. It sure is good to look at
the update site now and then.

I think it unlikely that Quicken could really destroy data, but maybe it can
misplace or lose track of data. Whenever I suspect a problem with a data
file, I re-index it by launching it and then pressing Command-Option-B. This
rebuilds and verifies the data file.

I have not done it in OSX / Quicken 2003, so I just tried it. Start Quicken
and then press the keys. A series of quick progress bars appears.

Here are some old official instructions on re-indexing, showing more
precautions than I just took:

1. Open the Quicken program to the file where the error message is
occurring.
2. When the file opens, go to an account register and reindex the file
(hold down the Option+Command+b keys).
3. After the file is reindexed, save a copy of the file to the desktop.
4. Select Open on the File menu and open the copy of the file that was
saved to the desktop.
5. Exit Quicken and reopen to the copy of the data file. If it opens and
everything works correctly, continue using the file copy and delete the
original.
6. If the error persists, create a New file. Choose New on the File menu
and save the new file to the desktop. Create several test accounts within
the file.
7. If the error message does not occur in the new file, go back to the
copy of the original data file and do an export/import into a new data file.
