After 3 years, my powerbook's battery holds about an hours worth of power.
I imagine this is due to the large amount of time I've used it with it
plugged into the wall-socket.

I'm wondering what I could have done to make the battery last longer.
Whenever in reach of a socket [and without a need to power up the
battery], should I have been using my laptop without a battery?

I know that leaving the battery on its own will slowly see its charge run
down, but does its capacity to hold power go down too or is that only when
it's actively connected.

If I run without a battery, but attached to the power, am I in anyway
lowering some kind of on-board battery?

[I ask because I'm trying my windows box now without its battery and it
seems to be making an odd noise].
