Verizon has a service called Mobile Office that works with any data-capable phone, and it doesn't even cost extra. You just need the proper USB cable to connect your phone to the computer. (Assuming yours is a data-capable phone.) The speed is only 14.4 Kb/s, but that's plenty for reading mail. (I also suspect those Sony-Ericsson Bluetooth phones would work without a cable...) Since I have a Verizon cell phone, I've been meaning to try it. Here's a page about it.
