to expand on Wards' suggestions:

lack of available RAM can create problems. pauses in the middle of a  
scan or print may indicate writing to disk and can cause a disconnect  
within the software causing a freeze.

your second page problem could be in the OEM software, but also may  
be that the document is actually larger than one page. even though  
the bottom margin is blank there could be some additional formating  
still in use. this occurs frequently when printing web pages and  
occasionally with word processing etc.

i've had various printing problems in os x up to 10.4. after tigger,  
the problems seem to be user generated. best...jf
