Hi Nelson,
There's another system utility that you might try before you go
  the [root user] route; Titanium Software's OnyX.  It's free.
The only requirement is that you be the admin for your machine.

If you install it, launch and go to its top tool bar and click onto
  "Cleaning", and then the 'Trash' tab.  There's a Force Delete
  choice of simple delete or secure delete.  Do it a second time
  if it returns directories to review.   Some functions require a
  restart immediately afterwards.

Give it a try.
