Hi all, Problem solved (at least partially).
It seems that the update Apple released on July 31 for airport extreme cards on intel-based macs has at least temporarily fixed the problem. Odd stuff: . The bad behavior could be induced by trying to do anything with a network (clicking on the Network preference pane, clicking on any field in the Network pref pane, or clicking on the airport menu icon). Pushing on the power cord to the Mac Mini would then resolve the problem until the next use of anything network related. Jeez, what a waste of time!
