It is possible to daisy chain All Firewire devices or all USB devices. (If the usb device has a hub built in to allow aditional devices). But you must understand the computer which in the end of the chain must be able to address all the devices with the original format. So if you plug a device into the fireware port of the computer everything device from that point on must be firewire to receive the proper ID number. For the computer will talk to each device with this ID number. The ID number/protocols/etc used for Firewire is no where near compatible with USB.
I'm sorry but I don't see how this could work in any way shape or form to start Firewire and end up USB. As for the example I gave with connecting over a network cable. You would have needed to take the hard drive out of its current enclosure to then place it in the one that supports networking.
