I agree with Bryan. Your laptop doesn't have enough power to be able  
to run the the drive. If you are in love with this drive and don't  
want to exchange it you could buy a powered USB 2 hub that has an  
external power cable. The hub would then have enough juice to power  
the drive and you could then plug your USB 1 port into the hub without  
worrying about the mac supply the power.

If this is a problem I would recommend going back and exvhanging it  
for a FireWire 400 drive. Your mac would most likely have enough to  
power it while getting much faster access rates then USB 1.
