How about a Dymo? They are thermal, but are permanent.
They work with Macs. They are small, and will come in well under cost.

Don't know if they fit the need for printing "labels", but you
   be the judge with the specs from the website.  Three listed
   at under $500, and one is a "network-ready" for $400.
