Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the plugging-in-with-lid-closed one
tomorrow. With the other monitor plugged in, when I closed the lid, the
monitor went black.  I could not wake it up by hitting the spacebar or
whatever.  The only way I could wake it up was by lifting the lid.  So, I
guess you're saying that plugging in the monitor into the MacBook's dvi
outlet will wake it up even though the lid is closed.  I'll give it a shot.

The link to the Apple page suggests something that I already tried (that did
not work).  I guess it's not applicable to Intel MacBooks.
