Lee,
I think that's what started the whole problem...can I trash libraries & start 
from scratch?  If so, which ones?

This means the program uses a shared library which is no longer 
present. I suspect there's no easy fix. Switch to VueScan [1]. I've 
been using it for years with an HP scanner.
