to achieve a file of any value you need a flatbed scanner portable  
scanners are intended for print documents so they would not work well  
on thicker photo print stock. the canon below, or maybe an epson  
perfection v100 would work. you could store it horizontal/vertical,  
but it would need to be upright in use. best...jf
