Harry, If you get the iTouch now you should get the latest version, thus saving yourself $19.00, those that have the older models will have all the same benefits, if we pay for the upgrade. We will become used to this as more and more programs are brought to the iPhone.
As far as extended warranty I have become their biggest fan. I have had a MacBook back in for repairs twice, no cost even for the shipping. I had four Airport Extremes go bad but because I have an extended warranty on my computers these were covered completely, replaced and no charge for shipping. I won't buy anything else without the extended protection.
