hmm. that's interesting.
of course all of my recent macs have been portables, so i don't have  
to worry about such things.

anyways, in recent memory, on both a G4 iBook, G4 powerbook, and two  
macbooks, holding down the option key while booting has let me choose  
from a bootable drive or an install CD/DVD.

i'll keep the other methods in mind though.
