makes sense now. the exclamation point is non-functional on occasion,  
requiring a trip to systems prefs/keyboard/reset to default. i don't  
excited often, but want the key available when i do! best...jf

Aluminum keyboards still can't do startup commands on some Macs

Users continue to lament the fact that Apple's aluminum keyboards do  
not support startup commands (holding the option key to select a boot  
volume, holding the "C" key to boot from an optical disc, etc) on some  
Macs. Even though this issue has existed for months, Apple has yet to  
document it in its Knowledge Base or anywhere else we could find. In  
the words of one MacFixIt reader:
