This depends on your needs.
Is the single machine able to take advantage of the 802.11N standard  
(core 2 duo intel macs)?
Would you have use of the "Air Disk" features (requires an external  
USB hard drive)?

Currently, we have 4 machines using an airport express.
They're relatively cheap, and I like the AirTunes function.

Another option, if you're looking to spend the money might be the soon  
to be released TimeCapsule.
It has an airport extreme with a "server grade" hard drive inside, and  
can be used with time machine to back up wirelessly.
